I am a Freelance Knight

I've been a freelancer for over 20 years but only recently came to realise that when I introduced myself that way I meant that

I am a knight on a warhorse. This is why: the term was first used by Sir Walter Scott (1771–1832) in Ivanhoe (1820) to describe a "medieval mercenary warrior" or "free-lance" (indicating that the lance is not sworn to any lord's services, not that the lance is available free of charge). Also the lance is a pole weapon or spear designed to be used by a mounted warrior.
This is the beauty of languages - even the seemingly familiar words hide treasure troves of stories and legends.
